TALK STORY is the Hawaiian Pidgin English term for chatting and openly talking with friends about memories, ideas, and stories. Each TALK STORY session will open with an examination of a question prompted by a reading relevant to the particular class design.
TALK STORY sessions provide a space for you to discuss reading, literature, craft, and the application of the ideas raised by reading and writing to your real life. TALK STORY sessions serve as a space to delve into your reading and writing life, examine your creative process challenges, and explore how you author your story—both on the page and in real life. TALK STORY sessions may include writing prompts and sharing.
TALK STORY: MASTER NARRATIVES will explore reading and writing through the lens of master narratives. A Master Narrative is a dominant story/or stories that control(s) culture. Master Narratives are widely accepted as an intractable history, truth, ideology to explain and maintain the status quo. Participants examine the master narratives in writing and discover the parallels, intersections, and ways we reinforce/rebel when confronted with these stories. Each month will feature a different book or author. There is optional in-class writing and sharing to encourage creative process and voice.
TALK STORY: WRITE YOUR DIVORCE STORY is for women who have divorced or who are now divorcing. We will discuss implicit and explicit stories that were conveyed about women and roles in society, along with how divorce is framed within culture and community. This class will also support those currently writing their divorce story in addition to reading selected poems, essays and stories.
